A question about digital pianos, help would be greatly appreciated?

Alrightyo, so I’m looking for a new digital piano because the little keyboard I currently have is only 5 octaves and almost as old as I am… So I’d like to know, what kind of digital piano do you use and is it still available in stores? If so, where?
Or maybe if you know where to get some high quality ones send me a link or tell me the make?
P.S. Price will not effect my decision

Go for a Yamaha, 88 keys, hammer weighted action. I have 2, one is a Yamaha Clavinova, the other is a Korg N1. The Korg is my traveling instrument, it has lots of voices and is useful in playing in pit orchestras for musical productions.

Does anyone have suggestions for digital pianos that are on the inexpensive side?

I’m willing to spend around $500, maybe $600 at most. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy; I just want something that feels like a real piano when it comes to how it feels when hitting the keys, and the sound.

I’d also appreciate suggestions on where to buy them, other than eBay. I prefer to buy from an actual store but I guess I don’t mind resorting to an online store if there aren’t any good deals available.

Looks like you are quite sure about what you want – which is great and makes the suggestion a lot easier, to say at least. In turn, I’m not so sure what you want your instrument for and, in plain words, how much do you expect from it.

It is mainly about your performing level. Just home playing and occasional amateur gigs – one set of needs. Electronic substitute for serious recitals’ piano and decent public shows – naturally, another. In both cases, however, I would NOT recommend Yamahas: IMHO, they have very hard "bottom" of the keys so your fingers really start aching after some time, like you were practicing on a wooden table… And they sound too crappy for their shifted prices.

Korgs are not for serious player, but on amateur level they may be Ok. Plastic feel and sound – do I have to say more?
Rolands, on the other hand, are darn good. And darn expensive. Kawai may be the best fit for you. As well as less known Asian-made labels.

The best thing I can suggest: hit any BIG e-store, like zzsound, and look thru their selection of digital pianos. See the prices and, more importantly, read the reviews – customers are mostly intelligent folks, so you’ll get pretty adequate picture. Then, when your searching circle will be narrowed to, say, 3 to 5 models, simply Google for them – you’ll get bunches of offers, guaranteed! After that it’s up to you to contact the stores for possible deals on used instruments.

What is velocity switching in digital pianos?

I recently bought a new digital piano, and have heard much talk about "velocity switching"… What is it in fact referring to?

It is a way for a digital piano to have a more "realistic" piano sound at different volumes. It means that there are layers of multiple sounds, and which sound is used depends on how hard the piano key is struck. If there was just one sample (a sample is the "recording" of the sound wave that will be played back) then it wouldn’t sound realistic because the resonance of the acoustic piano string changes as it is hit harder. Velocity Switching is a way of trying to reproduce that. You press the key softly, you get a sample sound that is "recorded" (recorded is not actually an accurate term here) from a acoustic piano playing softly; you press the key a little bit harder, then you get a sample of sound that is "recorded" from an acoustic piano being played a little louder. You hit the key really hard, you get a sample of a sound that is "recorded" from an acoustic piano being hit loud… etc… Hope that made sense to you.

Can you disable headphone speaker ouptut on digital pianos?

The tip of the plug from my Headphones is stuck in one the phone jacks of my Yamaha p70 digital pano and now there is no sound.

The head has created a ground that will not release to the external speakers until you remove the head. If you can’t you need to replace the female connection completely.
